Since olden times, Uji has been an area of scenic beauty, uniquely blessed with abundant water from the Uji River. Situated near its banks, Byodoin Temple is home to a number of precious cultural assets from the Heian period, such as the Phoenix Hall which symbolizes people’s aspiration for the Buddhist Pure Land, the main image of the Amida Buddha, the Praying Buddhist Saint on Clouds and more.

This special exhibition will introduce a handful of the cultural and artistic heritages of Byodoin Temple. Many have been rarely shown in public, however each is essential to depict this magnificent temple with about 1000 years of history.

At the same time, a variety of cultural documents and literary works from different periods introducing the beauty of Uji will be exhibited. These include the last ten chapters of the Tale of Genji which features tragic love set in Uji, the Battle of Genji vs Heike, and the history of Uji green tea, long considered the queen of Japanese tea.

Taking a walk through the town of Uji to the adjacent Tale of Genji Museum, visitors can enjoy learning even more about the town and Byodoin Temple along with their special exhibition and will discover why Uji and Byodoin Temple have always attracted people for over a thousand years.
