Warriors and Uji — The Interwoven History of Samurai and the Arts

2026.4.28

Since ancient times, Uji has been a vital crossroads, connecting regions by both land and water. During the Heian period, it became renowned as the setting of the Uji Jujo Chapters of The Tale of Genji, and as a scenic retreat where aristocrats built their villas.Yet Uji has also long been shadowed by conflict. It was a battleground where rival warriors fought for power.

This exhibition introduces literary and artistic works inspired by the history of warfare in Uji, focusing on the world of the samurai.
